Things I’ve learned about new beginnings: For me and a lot of other people, my new beginning at college was a chance to re-invent myself. But I never saw it like that. I saw college as a fresh start, a place where I wasn’t bound by juvenile mistakes or the constraints of school. So far it’s lived up to my expectations and then some. I have met so many new, wonderful people and I love it!
If you’re finding this new beginning a little rough, try and remember a few of these tips:
- Always SMILE :D
- Don’t be afraid to start the conversation. I spent a good 15 minutes once before a lecture working up the courage to offer a guy next to me a chewing gum so I could initiate conversation. He could’ve been a potentially amazing friend but I was too late. I vowed never to do that again.
- If it’s scary, it’s probably something you should try. Even if you suck, at least you tried! Now you have something funny/interesting to talk about with new friends.
- Don’t base your decisions on the opinions of other people. What works for others may not work for you.
- If you want to do something, ask yourself ‘why not?’ and then go ahead and do it.
- Look for clubs and societies to join that interest you the most. Strike a balance between ‘things-you-know-you-like-already’ and ‘things-you’ve-never-tried-before’.
